Death of St. Charles Parish jail inmate under investigation

ST. CHARLES PARISH, La. (WGNO) — The St. Charles Parish Sheriff’s Office is investigating the death of an inmate that happened over the weekend.

According to deputies, at 2:26 a.m. on Sunday, Aug. 11, Nelson Colman Correctional Center inmates alerted officers that 37-year-old Khris Pfister was in medical need.

Responding offers found Pfister in the bathroom of his dorm appearing to be in medical distress and unresponsive. A nurse also responded to the dorm and began performing CPR.

Deputies said Pfister, who had been in custody since Aug. 2, was seen on security video just four minutes earlier, putting on his shoes and walking to the bathroom.

EMS arrived at the jail at 2:48 a.m., and by 2:52 a.m., they took him to the St. Charles Parish Hospital in Luling. He was then airlifted to University Medical Center in New Orleans.

Deputies reported that 12 hours later, at 2:21 p.m., Pfister was pronounced dead.

An autopsy done by the Jefferson Parish Coroner’s Office revealed Pfister had suffered from “multiple bleeding ulcers.” Autopsy results are incomplete as they await results from toxicology tests.

Deputies noted that Pfister did not disclose the condition to jail staff or sought out medical attention.
