Demi Lovato seen in public for the first time since her overdose
Demi Lovato is inching back into public life two months after her near-fatal overdose.
The “Sober” singer, 26, was photographed during an outing from her rehab facility. According to TMZ, which obtained the photo, she used her day pass on Sunday to go for a jaunt, seemingly at a strip mall. She wore a green jacket, black leggings, a hat, and white sneakers while she talked to an unidentified woman walking a dog. Lovato clutched a coffee cup and appeared to be smiling and healthy-looking in the candid shot.
This is the first we’ve seen of the star since she overdosed on July 24 at her Hollywood Hills home and nearly died. Lovato, who has a long history with addiction, reportedly took aftermarket pills that were apparently laced with fentanyl. She was given a shot of Narcan before being rushed to the hospital, where she spent nearly two weeks recovering before heading off to the East Coast for rehab.
With Lovato’s permission, her mom, Dianna De La Garza, spoke with Newsmax TV last week and recounted the terrifying moment when she learned of her daughter’s overdose. She also discussed just how serious the life-or-death incident was, sharing that Lovato was in “critical condition” for a “couple of days,” admitting they didn’t know if she would live.
“We just didn’t know for two days if she was going to make it or not,” De La Garza said. “I was very concerned, and I was trying to be strong for her and for her sisters and for my family back home.” She gave big props to the doctors at Cedars-Sinai: “I couldn’t have asked for a better team of people to save her life.” Her mom went on to say that today Lovato “is doing really well. She’s happy, she’s healthy, she’s working on her sobriety, and she’s getting the help she needs. That in itself encourages me about her future and the future of our family.”
According to TMZ, Lovato’s ex-boyfriend Wilmer Valderrama, with whom she has remained close, has traveled to her rehab facility to visit. They were spotted grabbing coffee at a local Starbucks.
Lovato has been making changes to her life behind the scenes as well. One is that she’s selling the $8 million mansion where she overdosed. It’s unclear how long she’ll continue in rehab at this point and where she’ll go when she’s done. However, she has lived in a sober house before — for over a year after a previous rehab stint — so a situation like that, or one in which she’s living on her own with a sober coach, could be the next step.
