SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WCIA) — Sangamon County Sheriff Jack Campbell denied that former Deputy Sean Grayson‘s references — which included his fiancé’s father, a longtime sheriff’s deputy — influenced his hiring.

In his application, Grayson had a recommendation from former Sangamon County Deputy Scott Butterfield, Grayson’s fiancé’s father.

“Certainly having worked with Scott for all those years, I did, you know, believe in that like I would anybody that I knew for any position,… I do give some weight to that,” Campbell said. “But it’s the same process for everybody and it gave him no edge up.”

“When I know somebody like that it’s when if they call me about it. I’ll say, well, we’ll give an interview, but it will be no different for that person than somebody else,” he added.

Campbell also noted the Sheriff’s Office is looking for deputies and employees with more diverse backgrounds but they are finding less and less applicants.

“We know that we received less applications because of maybe a narrative that people don’t want to work in law enforcement anymore,” Campbell said. “That really doesn’t make any sense to us because it’s good pay, good benefits. And and yet we’re receiving a lot less applicants.”
