What to know about the Georgia high school shooting
Four people were killed and nine were injured yesterday in a shooting at Apalachee High School in Winder, Ga. It’s the deadliest of the 45 school shootings in the U.S. this year.
What to know: The suspected shooter, a 14-year-old student at the school, is in police custody and will be tried for murder as an adult. Local schools will be closed this week as an investigation plays out. [Yahoo News]
The victims: Officials identified students Mason Schermerhorn and Christian Angulo, as well as math teachers Richard Aspinwall and Christina Irimie, as the victims killed in the attack. Those injured were taken to hospitals and are expected to recover. [CNN]
Early signs: Last year, local law enforcement questioned the alleged gunman in connection to online threats to carry out a school shooting that included photos of guns. The suspect denied involvement at the time. [NBC News]

3 QUESTIONS
...about the 2024 NFL regular season
The NFL season kicks off tonight. I asked sports reporter Jori Epstein to break down what we could see on the field this year.
Lily: There’s a major change to kickoffs this year. What’s different?
Jori: I’d call out two key points: You’ll see less running at the start of plays to reduce high-speed collisions, and you’ll see more kickoff returns because they’re now “worth” more. Here’s a good explanation.
Lily: You wrote that the Kansas City Chiefs are trying to win a third consecutive Super Bowl title. Do you think they can pull it off?
Jori: Well, history says they can’t. But history hasn’t seen a head coach-QB combo like Andy Reid and Patrick Mahomes. If they don’t win this year, I bet they’ll get at least one more title in the next three years.
Lily: If I only have time to watch one game this week, what should it be?
Jori: Championship game, but it also pits Mahomes against reigning MVP Lamar Jackson. Plus, you might see Taylor Swift, who’s still dating Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce!
What will it take for the Chiefs to win a third title in a row? Jori explains.
