‘A Different World’ cast reunites for HBCU tours

The cast of the groundbreaking sitcom “A Different World” is headed back to school.

To celebrate the 35-year legacy of the hit show, the cast will hit the road for a 10-city tour of historically Black colleges and universities.

“After three decades, we’re returning to the roots of ‘A Different World’ to make history on campuses that shaped the narrative of HBCU experiences,” the tour’s website explained.

Darryl M. Bell, Charnele Brown, Jasmine Guy, Kadeem Hardison, Dawnn Lewis, Cree Summer, Glynn Turman and Sinbad will all participate in the tour, according to an exclusive report by People magazine.

The goal of this is to “raise awareness and enrollment for HBCUs nationwide,” the tour explained. “By leveraging the star power and cultural impact of ‘A Different World,’ we aim to inspire a new generation to choose HBCUs as their academic homes.”

The show’s producers, Debbie Allen and Susan Fales, are also set to be included.

It will begin on Feb. 29 in Atlanta and will be hosted by Atlanta University Center, whose members include Clark Atlanta University, Spelman College and Morehouse College.

In April, the tour will make a stop in Washington, D.C., which will be hosted by Howard University. That same month, another tour stop will take place in Montgomery, Alabama, which will be hosted by Alabama State University and Tuskegee University.

The exact dates for those tour stops will be announced later.

The “Cosby Show” spinoff ran for six seasons on NBC from September 1987 to July 1993. The show was centered around Lisa Bonet’s character, Denise Huxtable, and the lives of other college students at a fictional HBCU, Hillman College.

Bonet left the show after the first season, as did as Marisa Tomei and Loretta Devine.

Other big names that later appeared in the series were Jada Pinkett Smith, Karen Malina White and Glynn Turman.
