President Joe Biden drops out of race
President Joe Biden announced on Sunday that he is halting his reelection campaign, amid significant pressure from Democratic leaders who have voiced concerns that his chances of defeating former President Donald Trump in November has vanished.
This unprecedented decision adds further unpredictability to the 2024 election. Vice President Kamala Harris is now viewed as the leading candidate to step in as the Democratic nominee.
"It has been the greatest honor of my life to serve as your President," Biden said in a written statement. "And while it has been my intention to seek reelection, I believe it is in the best interest of my party and my country for me to stand down and to focus solely on my duties as President for the rest of my term."
