When does hurricane season end? Here’s when the southeast might catch a break.

From Beryl and Francine to Helene and Milton, this year's hurricane season battered the Southeast U.S. and its residents and its visitors to the core.

It's not over.

There have been 13 named storms in the 2024 Atlantic hurricane season. Combined they've left millions without power, destroyed communities and left more than 300 people in the nation dead so far this year: Beryl (36 fatalities), Debby (9), Helene (242, as of evening Oct. 9 and counting), and Milton (16).

A system that developed east of Florida this week briefly looked like it might spawn into the next named storm Nadine, but it dissipated before becoming one, the National Hurricane Center reported Thursday. The federal agency was also monitoring Tropical Storm Leslie in the Atlantic, but as of Friday there were no coastal watches or warnings in effect and it was not predicted to land in the U.S.

When does hurricane season end?

A typical Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 through Nov. 30.

The Atlantic basin includes the Atlantic Ocean, Caribbean Sea and Gulf of Mexico.

Countdown clock: How much longer will hurricane season last?

Tropical activity could continue into December this year

While tropical activity generally slows down after mid-October. Don't count on that this year.

This season could "rank among the busiest on record," NOAA said in its August forecast.

NOAAAccuWeather and and Colorado State University have all predicted the number of storms could be higher than average, with AccuWeather predicting this season has the potential to break the all-time record of 30 named storms in one season.

When is the busiest part of the Atlantic hurricane season?

The most active period of the Atlantic hurricane season historically has been from mid-August through mid-October. The peak hits Sept. 10.

What are the names for the rest of the 2024 Atlantic hurricane season?

Names for the 2024 Atlantic hurricane season were last used in 2018 and will be used again in 2030 unless any are retired and replaced by the World Meteorologist Organization.
