Dog surrendered following abuse video, threats to Ponchatoula suspects

PONCHATOULA, La. (WGNO) — A dog that was recorded being abused in a 2023 social media video is being surrendered after three teenage suspects and their families began receiving threats.

The Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s Office reported that it was made aware of the video on Saturday, July 27, although the incident initially happened in the Manchac area in early 2023. The video showed a male dog being abused on a hunting trip.

Three 15-year-old boys from Ponchatoula were arrested in connection to the video. One is accused of abusing the dog, another is accused of recording and the third is accused of not intervening while it was happening.

They were all arrested at their homes. The one accused of doing the abuse has been charged with animal cruelty, while the other two have been charged with principle to animal cruelty.

The sheriff’s office now reports that though the dog has not been in the presence of the suspects, it’s now being surrendered to a new home.

This comes after threats were made to the suspects and their families.

“Devastated does not begin to cover how we feel about this entire situation. Because
we love our son, we are committed to ensuring that he learns appropriately from this
experience through accountability measures in the court system and at home. And
because we love our dog, we are committed to ensuring it has a home where it is safe,” said a parent of the boy who’s accused of inflicting the abuse.

The dog is expected to receive a full medical evaluation before it’s rehomed. Tangipahoa Parish Animal Services is handling the rehoming.
