Dolly Parton celebrates Imagination Library expansion in Kansas City
KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Dolly Parton received a warm welcome in Kansas City on Tuesday as she celebrated the Missouri statewide expansion of her Imagination Library.
“I was excited because I’m thinking, I’m going to Kansas City…. and I’ve always loved the song, and love the state,” she told FOX4.
The acclaimed singer and actress’ 9 to 5 has turned to working all day. Her father, who didn’t know how to read or write, influenced the idea for her library.

“It just seemed to bother him a lot… to cripple him emotionally more than anything because he was a brilliant man, and I always wanted to do something for my dad because he’s always done so much for us,” she said.
The inspiration sparked the Imagination Library, which provides families the chance to receive five books each month from when kids are born to when they turn 5 years old and start school.
“They’re going to grab somebody in their house, whether it be a brother, sister, and it instills a love for reading and family as well,” Parton said.
Governor Mike Parson and First Lady Teresa Parson also attended to show their support. Gov. Parson shared with the crowd how the state was able to fund the program and the impact it’s having on kids’ lives.
This generation will know Parton much differently than fans before.
“I feel like an aunt, like I am the book lady, so I am an aunt that might come and visit sometimes. Like, ‘Where’s the book lady? She’s part of our family!'” Parton said.
