Donald Trump Bombs NABJ Panel, Questions Kamala Harris’ “Blackness”
Former President Donald Trump joined the National Association of Black Journalists convention for a Q&A on Wednesday (July 31) — which saw a very combative side of the Republican nominee.
Trump, who reportedly arrived late, was questioned about his controversial and insensitive remarks made throughout his campaign geared towards the Black community.
Conducted by Rachel Scott, Harris Faulkner, and Kadia Goba, Trump addressed remarks he’s made such as Vice President Kamala Harris not being Black, immigrants taking “Black jobs” and other derogatory sentiments.
Scott began with one hell of a introduction for Trump, recalling: “You’ve used ‘animal ‘and ‘rabid’ to describe Black district attorneys. You’ve attacked Black journalists, calling them a loser, saying the questions they asked are, ‘stupid and racist.’ You had dinner with a white supremacist at your Mar-a-Lago resort. So my question, sir, now that you’re asking Black supporters to vote for you: Why should Black voters trust you after you have used language like that?”
Taken back, Trump responded, “I don’t think I’ve ever been asked a question so, in such a horrible manner,” later calling her intro “very rude.” He added, “That wasn’t a question. She didn’t ask me a question. She gave a statement. That wasn’t a question.”
Elsewhere in their sit-down, the 78-year-old was asked to address remarks he’s made about Harris’ race and the Republican party considering her a “DEI hire.”
“I didn’t know she was Black until a number of years ago when she happened to turn Black, and now she wants to be known as Black,” he responded. “So I don’t know, is she Indian or is she Black? She was Indian all the way, and all of a sudden she made a turn, and she became a Black person.”
Scott quickly responded, “She’s always been Black.” Harris is of South Asian and Caribbean descent, as her mother is Indian and her father, Jamaican.
Trump’s appearance at the NABJ convention apparently rubbed many Black voters the wrong way, as the journalists brought up Trump’s past treatment of Black reporters during his presidential term.
“I come in good spirits. I love the Black population of this country. I’ve done so much for the Black population,” he insisted. “I have been the best president for the Black population since Abraham Lincoln,” he added, leaving the entire room floored with gasps.
As we all know, Lincoln was infamous for issuing the Emancipation Proclamation in 1863 — which called for all slaves to be freed.
