Donald Trump’s on-off bromance with Elon Musk appears to be very much on.

Speaking at the Economic Club in New York yesterday, Trump said Musk had agreed to oversee a “complete financial and performance audit of the entire federal government” and would make “recommendations for drastic reforms.”
Musk responded on X by writing: “I look forward to serving America if the opportunity arises. No pay, no title, no recognition is needed.”
The pair have hinted at a formal role for Musk in a future Trump government over recent weeks, and now it appears to be more than speculation. They spoke about the need for a government efficiency commission in a talk on X in August and Musk has since shared memes alluding to the idea.
Musk was on a Trump advisory panel during the former President’s tenure, but stepped down in 2017 after Trump decided to pull the U.S. out of the Paris climate agreement.
Though Musk has usually claimed to be politically neutral, he has moved further to the right since buying X (then Twitter) in 2022 and endorsed Trump in July. It is believed he is contributing to a fundraising group for the Trump campaign, though he has denied this.
In a statement to the BBC, Trump campaign advisor Brian Hughes said: “It is premature to discuss any prospective personnel in the next administration, but we welcome the enthusiasm and support of Elon Musk.”
“When Elon started the conversation with the president, I think the president was very excited that somebody like Elon Musk is so dedicated to America’s future that he would be willing to be a part of something to help the government work more efficiently,” added Hughes in a statement to reporters quoted by CNBC.
