Donald Trump evokes Kamala Harris' father in Marxism accusation: Who is he?

Former President Donald Trump accused Vice President Kamala Harris of being a Marxist at the first presidential debate Tuesday.

“Everything that she believed three years ago and four years ago is out the window. She is going to my philosophy now. In fact, I was going to send her a MAGA hat.” Trump said, according to debate host ABC News. “She is a Marxist. Everyone knows she is a Marxist. Her father is a Marxist professor in economics. He taught her well.”

Harris apparently laughed it off, according to the outlet.

Here is what to know about Harris' father and Trump's claim:

Who is Kamala Harris’ father and professor?

Donald Harris, Kamala Harris' father, is a post-keynesian economist who has written on Marxist theory. He is a retired Stanford University professor who has served as an economic advisor to his home country of Jamaica. He also taught at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

In her Democratic National Convention acceptance speech, Harris described her father as a “student from Jamaica” when he and her mother met.

Born in Jamaica, Donald Harris immigrated to the US to complete a doctorate degree at the University of California, Berkeley. That’s where he met Harris' mother Shyamala Gopalan Harris, who was pursuing a degree in biochemistry there.

Donald Harris has largely stayed out of the vice president's political life.
