Kamala Harris' husband, Doug Emhoff, took the stage at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago on Tuesday, speaking on behalf of his wife, newly cemented as the party nominee for president.

Here's what to know about Emhoff:

How old is Doug Emhoff?

He's 59 years old, exactly one week older than his wife. He was born Oct. 13; she was born Oct. 20, both in 1964.

He's the first second gentleman of the United States and, with a Harris/Walz victory, he would become first gentleman.

Doug Emhoff spent time growing up on both coasts

Emhoff was born in Brooklyn, New York, and grew up in New Jersey but as a teenager moved with his family to Southern California, where he graduated from Agoura High School in Agoura Hills, California, near Los Angeles. He attended Cal-State Northridge and USC for undergraduate and juris-doctorate work, respectively. He began a law career in 1990.

Doug Emhoff is a former entertainment lawyer who stepped aside when Harris became vice president

Emhoff worked for one of the world's largest law firms at DLA Piper, and his clients included studio executives, production companies, national brands and even a former NFL athlete.

He took a leave of absence from that job after Harris joined the Democratic ticket. The connections in the entertainment industry came in handy when he helped his wife campaign for U.S. Senate in 2016 in California.

Since the 2020 election, Emhoff has taught law classes at Georgetown University and advocated for women's rights and access to legal aid, as well as calling attention to antisemitism and issues of mental health. Emhoff is Jewish.

When and where did Kamala Harris and Doug Emhoff meet, and when did they get married?

The pair were set up on a blind date in 2013 by Harris' best friend, Chrisette Hudlin, who was being represented by Emhoff. Harris was California's attorney general at the time.

They were married in 2014 in Santa Barbara, California, in a ceremony officiated by Harris' sister, Maya. Kamala later officiated the ceremony of Emhoff's son, Cole, in 2023. It was her first marriage and his second.

On Thursday, the night Harris addresses the Democratic National Convention in Chicago, it will be the couple's 10th wedding anniversary.

Doug Emhoff was previously married and has two children

Emhoff has been married once before to Kerstin Emhoff, with whom he has two children, Cole (age 29) and Ella (age 25).

The two have spoken at length about their warm relationship with Harris, somewhat famously referring to her as "Momala." Both have been supportive of Harris' political pursuits.

Ella was in high school and Cole in college when their father married Harris.
