Driver sentenced for role in crash that killed 15-year-old

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — A Hamburg man has been sentenced for his role in a two-vehicle crash that left a 15-year-old girl dead in 2023, the Erie County District Attorney’s office said Wednesday.

Justin T. Trane, 30, was sentenced to six months in jail followed by five years of probation.

On the evening of Aug. 20, 2023, Trane drove through a red light while operating a van at the intersection of Quinby Drive and McKinley Parkway in Hamburg and hit a car being driven by 18-year-old Dylan Wiza of Williamsville, according to officials. It was later found that Trane was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the crash.

The 15-year-old girl in Wiza’s vehicle died at Oishei Children’s Hospital, while another 16-year-old girl in the car was injured.

Trane pleaded guilty to one count of vehicular manslaughter in May. As part of his sentence, his driver’s license was revoked. If his license is restored, he will be required to install an ignition interlock device for one year.

Wiza, who was under the influence of marijuana at the time of the crash, also pleaded guilty to vehicular manslaughter in May. He is scheduled to be sentenced on Oct. 3.
