East Baton Rouge school superintendent finalists talk with community, business leaders
BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) — Two finalists for the next East Baton Rouge superintendent position spent Monday, July 8, meeting with business and community leaders. Both showcased their education resumes and answered questions in a panel discussion.
The two remaining candidates are Kevin George, director of the University Laboratory School at LSU, and Andrea Zayas, former executive director of an education nonprofit in Boston.
Over the weekend, a third finalist dropped out of the race. Krish Mohip cited another job opportunity as his reason.
The board has set a Thursday, July 11, deadline to fill the position.
As the search comes to an end and school is around the corner, Anthony Kenny, a panel member, said its important that they hire the right person.

“We have to make sure the leader that comes to this community has a path forward to ensure our district is a very high(ly) competitive and viable district that kids want to learn in,” he said.
Finalists answered questions and discussed topics key to the district, such as bussing issues.
“It is imperative that the superintendent — that I — am aware of any potential issues that are there. And we do that by regular check-ins with our people, with our chiefs, and to ensure that everything is on point,” said George.
Other topics included their Day 1 goals.
“Immediate action plan is working with the board to ensure that we have an aligned set of key performance indicators and priorities that we can all rally around,” said Zayas.
Panel member Jamie Robinson said he isn’t sure the best choice is among the current finalists.

“I was not satisfied with the responses that I received, and it’s simply because these candidates are not aware of the politics and the cultural dynamics that our school system is facing,” he said.
After the panel discussions are done, Robinson said he hopes board members reconsider interim superintendent Adam Smith for the position.
“With the opening of the third finalist dropping out, that Adam Smith should be reconsidered immediately,” Robinson said. “Our community, our faculty, our staff now know that they want him, but we need him.”
