BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) — East Baton Rouge Superintendent LaMont Cole said he’s optimistic about his transition as a leader in the school system.

He wants to help redirect the focus back to students’ safety, academic needs and career options.

“I plan to spend the next few months traveling East Baton Rouge Parish,” said Cole.

That’s part of Cole’s 100-day plan for the East Baton Rouge Parish School System.

“We spent the entire morning visiting every department at the school system,” said Cole. “I just wanted to walk in and say hello and thank the employees for their efforts.”

In his 100-day plan, the goal is to focus on safer environments, a well-rounded curriculum to meet student’s needs and more classroom engagement between the student and teacher.

Cole shared at the Press Club that COVID-19 and the pandemic shutdown created a disconnect in students’ learning capabilities. He said the district’s goal is to improve that learning curve from the pandemic.

“It is my desire to bring the human connection back,” Cole said. “The human connection changed a little bit. We had to teach our students through computers and then when we came back to school, we learned a lot of bad habits.”

Cole plans to achieve that goal by making students feel more confident in taking standardized tests.

“Children who are not confident enough to pass standardized tests are equally as important because if I don’t feel like I can do well, I may choose to not even try,” explained Cole. “I want our students to wake up every single day in the East Baton Rouge Parish School System, excited to go to a school. Where people genuinely care about who they are first. And then I care so much about who you are. I’m willing to do whatever it takes to prepare you for the next phase of your academic career.”

A special meeting will be held on Thursday, Aug 1, to vote and sign the superintendent’s contract at 5 p.m. at the EBR school board.
