Elizabeth Warren: The system is rigged, and Donald Trump would make it worse
PHILADELPHIA — Sen. Elizabeth Warren told Democratic delegates Monday night that the system is “rigged” against people who aren’t wealthy and that Donald Trump would make that worse if he is elected president.
“People get it: The system is rigged,” Warren said at the Democratic National Convention.
She argued that Trump, the GOP nominee, has taken advantage of the system to exploit people. “His whole life has been about taking advantage of that rigged system,” Warren said.
She further criticized Republicans in Congress for opposing an increase in the minimum wage and other legislative proposals that she said would improve life for members of the middle class, and promised: “To every Republican in Congress who said no, this November, the American people are coming for you.”
Warren, who frequently battles with Trump on the airwaves and on Twitter, accused the Manhattan developer of dividing up Americans in order to win votes.
“Trump thinks he can win votes by fanning the flames of fear and hatred, by persuading you that the real problem in America is your fellow Americans, people who don’t talk like you or worship like you or look like you,” she said.
Warren has become something of a hero on the left for her opposition to Wall Street, but not all of the delegates of Sen. Bernie Sanders resonated with her speech. The Massachusetts senator had remained neutral during the primary and only endorsed Hillary Clinton after the presumptive Democratic nominee gained enough delegates essentially to lock up her party’s banner.
“You sold your birthright for a bowl of porridge!” one California delegate, Luci Riley, shouted during Warren’s speech. Other Sanders delegates chanted “No TPP,” referring to the Trans-Pacific Partnership, at another point during her speech.
Elizabeth Warren, often referred to as Pocahontas, just misrepresented me and spoke glowingly about Crooked Hillary, who she always hated!
