Elma man arrested on child porn charge after facial recognition technology used on photos from 2013
BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — An Elma man is facing a child pornography charge after facial recognition technology was used on photos that were from 2013, the U.S. Attorney’s office said Wednesday.
Authorities said that they received a referral from the Queensland Police Service in Australia about what appeared to be newly produced and unidentified child exploitation material in January 2023, which allegedly included 47 images of a female victim.
Authorities said that facial recognition technology was then used to identify the the victim, which led to a search warrant of the home of 53-year-old Matthew A. Steele after metadata determined the type and serial number of the camera. It was also found that the photos were allegedly created in March 2013.
At Steele’s home, authorities said they found several photos of the child victim in several different rooms as well as the camera used to take them.
Steele is charged with production and distribution of child pornography. If convicted, he faces a minimum of 15 years in prison and a maximum of 30 years.
