Eric Hovde gets RNC speaking slot, attacks Baldwin, Biden and news media

Wisconsin Republican Senate candidate Eric Hovde used his time on the Republican National Convention’s stage to launch attacks against some of his favorite targets.

Sen. Tammy Baldwin, President Joe Biden and the media all took the brunt of his criticism.

Hovde, a multimillionaire banking mogul, continued his attempts to tie Baldwin to Biden as the Madison Democrat has distanced herself from the president. Hovde said Democratic policies have “made us less safe at home.”

He pointed to the southern border and the fentanyl crisis as top issues. He said people’s budgets, the border and the world were more secure under former President Donald Trump.

“Biden and Baldwin have failed,” Hovde told the crowd during his approximately 3 1/2-minute speech. “President Trump and I will get the job done.”

Hovde lamented that the country has become “too divided” as he took aim at Democrats — “We need to heal this division that the left has brought,” he said — before going after the press.

“And the media: You have to stop dividing us,” he said, before using his “restore the American Dream” campaign slogan.

Democrats, meanwhile, have painted Hovde as an out-of-stater for his California ties, and they continued that line of attack Tuesday night.

“Nothing out-of-touch California multimillionaire Eric Hovde said on stage can change the fact that for months, Wisconsinites have heard him make disparaging remarks about folks across the state while pushing policies to benefit himself and his wealthy buddies,” Democratic Party of Wisconsin spokesman Arik Wolk said.

But Hovde opened his speech by seeming to anticipate the criticism.

After he welcomed delegates to Wisconsin, Hovde let the crowd know: His family has lived here for “more than 100 years.”
