Everything Sarah Hyland has shared about her life with chronic illness
Sarah Hyland has struggled with health issues — you may remember her going public after having a kidney transplant in 2012 — and it’s a battle that’s ongoing. It’s frustrating too.
This week the Modern Family fave, who has kidney dysplasia (when the organs do not develop properly), shared a photo of herself relaxing on a chair. She was super casual, wearing her glasses and cozy clothes, as she held a bag of snacks on her lap. Nurse Boo — her rescue dog — was by her side. The 27-year-old actress, who was last week at an event, noted that would be her “life for the next six to eight weeks,” though she added no further details as to why.
A second photo was of an adorable floral display from her boyfriend, Wells Adams. It’s of a dog holding a medical kit. Hyland referred to the former Bachelor contestant and potentially future fiancé as the “best boyfriend ever.”
Of course, her fans were worried about her in light of her new posts.
@Sarah_Hyland six to eight weeks on the couch? What’s going on lady? I hope you’re okay!

Soon after, she asked her Twitter followers, who are also sufferers of “chronic pain,” for advice. She was clearly frustrated about “doctors not listening” amid her struggles.
And then when a few news stories popped up in which she was speaking about her chronic illness, she posted again saying she was trying to feel “connected” to her followers who are also part of “the chronically ill community, which I have been a part of for 27 years.”
We reached out to her rep — as well as the Modern Family rep — to find out what’s plaguing the star and how it will affect the show’s production schedule (we haven’t heard back), but she’s long been speaking about her health issues.
April 13, 2012: Hyland, who had a lifelong battle with kidney dysplasia, secretly underwent a kidney transplant. She got the kidney from her father.
May 2012: She went public with her secret organ transplant, telling Seventeen, “I have a second chance at life — not a lot of people get that.” And she, of course, shouted-out her donor dad. (“My dad gave me a freakin’ kidney!”) She also gushed about her then-boyfriend Matt Prokop, who was helping her recover. “He helps me with my medication and takes me to doctor appointments and all the stuff that I need to do to take care of myself.”
April 2015: Hyland, who by then had moved on from Prokop with her Vampire Academy co-star Dominic Sherwood, again opened up about her kidney troubles to Seventeen. “I was born with so many health issues that doctors told my mother I would never have a normal life,” said the star. “And she said, ‘You’re right, she won’t — but it won’t be because of her health.’ When my mother told me that story, it resonated with me: If I can’t have an ordinary life, I might as well have an extraordinary one. If you set your mind to something, you’ll achieve it.”
January 2017: Hyland, who earned several Screen Actors Guild Awards for her work on the megahit Modern Family, said that she would have to skip the show that year for “health reasons.” She posted a photo of herself with Sherwood at the show the year before, writing. “So I leave you all with an adorable picture from last years @sagawards. Ps. You know my dress was gonna be turnt too.”
May 2017: After being body-shamed online for being too thin, Hyland opened up about her health and fluctuating weight. “I haven’t had the greatest year,” she shared on Twitter. “Maybe one day I’ll talk about it but for now, I’d like my privacy. I will say that this year has brought a lot of changes and with that, physical changes.”

Hyland, who wrote that she had been on bed rest, continued: “I have been told that I can’t work out. Which, for me, is very upsetting. I love to be STRONG. (I’ll be using that word a lot) Strength is everything. Being strong has gotten me where I am. Both mentally and physically. I am not a fan of ‘being skinny.’”

She also noted that her face was “swollen from my medication that is saving my life,” referring to Prednisone, a synthetic steroid hormone to prevent organ rejection and infections. She told others who take it that she knew what they were going through and applauded them for sticking it out.
November 2017: The actress slammed a tabloid for reporting that she appeared to have had plastic surgery on her face. “I have had the worst medical year of my life and to create an entire article surrounding the question of if I’ve had plastic surgery is the MOST insulting thing,” she tweeted. “Adding insult to injury. You have NO IDEA what I have been through. And I have someone [who] addressed these rumors already. People like you are the reason why young girls feel the need to alter their face. MY face has been altered by LIFE SAVING medication.”
The star talked about the common side effect of taking Prednisone, which is something called “moon face” swelling. While sharing her beauty regimen on Instagram, she said that she uses a tool to “roll my face out” to get rid of some swelling.
December 2017: Hyland called out CVS because she said the pharmacy was closed when she went to pick up her prescription. It was clear from the post that being without medication was very stressful for her.
March 2018: Hyland hit back at internet trolls after being thin-shamed over her appearance at the Vanity Fair Oscar Party. Again, she said she can’t control her weight because of the disease.
