‘It would be extremely detrimental for Lancaster’: Save-A-Lot shoppers react to store closing

LANCASTER, N.Y. (WIVB) — Residents in the Village of Lancaster are shocked that the Save-A-Lot on Aurora Street will be closing. The grocery store announced on social media its plans to close on Sept. 7.

Shoppers are concerned for the residents that live across the street from the store at the Lancaster Towers.

Shopper and Lancaster resident Kim Zanghi said there are people who live in the apartments who don’t have a car or can’t drive. Closing this location will affect their access to groceries, she said.

“It was upsetting because my mom used to live at the towers, she’s passed away, but she would take her little cart all the time and come over here,” she said. “I’m thinking about all the elderly people at the Lancaster Towers more than any of us that have cars, but the closest place is Tops, and that’s a walk for some of these people.”

Zanghi went onto say that the store’s location was convenient and the prices were good.

“It’s so much cheaper to go here than it is Tops or anywhere else so it’s really devastating to the community. It really is,” said shopper Stephanie Fisher.

Mark Goulding is one of several shoppers who are shocked the store is closing.

“There’s great savings for these people on a limited income,” shopper Mark Goulding said. “I just think they should keep it open. I really do.”

“Without this? It would be extremely detrimental for Lancaster,” he said.

In the Facebook post announcing its closure, Save-A-Lot thanked its employees and mentioned its new location at the corner of Union and French Roads in West Seneca.

“We appreciate the support that the residents of Lancaster have given us for 22 years and we will miss being a part of this community,” the location’s post said.
