3 QUESTIONS
...about actually relaxing on vacation
Want to maximize the mental health benefits of your summer vacation? Anthony asked wellness editor Erin Donnelly about the tips experts gave her team.
Anthony: What’s one big thing people can do to make the most of their vacations?
Erin: I’d suggest shaking things up! A psychologist told our reporter that trying a new experience during your trip — a paella cooking class, scuba diving, getting up for sunrise — can inspire awe. Not only is that great for your mental health, but it keeps your brain sharp too.
Anthony: Another expert talked about “mini-grounding techniques.” What are those?
Erin: I’d describe them as mental exercises that bring us to the present moment and help us be more mindful. One way the expert suggested doing that: Take a walk on the beach with bare feet and focus on how the sand and water feel.
Anthony: Did the experts have any tips for people who have trouble disconnecting from work?
Erin: Yeah! I thought these were good recs: Clear your inbox as much as possible before you go. Set firm boundaries with your job so you don’t have to worry about getting on your laptop while you’re away. And, if you can, turn off notifications or leave your work phone behind.
