First responders assist dozens of drivers amid record-breaking rainfall
ODESSA, Texas (KMID/KPEJ)- Law enforcement agencies and fire departments across the Basin were busy over the holiday weekend amid record breaking rainfall.
According to the National Weather Service, Midland International Air and Space Port saw a whopping 3.63 inches of rainfall on Monday. The previous record of 2.12 inches was set in 1988. Yesterday’s record also became the sixth highest one-day rainfall on record.
While the rainfall helped put a significant dent in the area’s drought, it also kept first responders busy as roads flooded.
The Odessa Police Department responded to approximately 23 drivers in need of assistance and Odessa Fire Rescue responded to about 26 high water rescue calls. OPD has asked drivers to use “extreme caution” if traveling at Charles Walker and Yukon, University and Tom Green, along 10th Street from Jackson to Adams, along Dixie Boulevard between 52nd Street and University, and along the service roads for both Interstate 20 and Business Interstate 20.
In Midland, first responders with the Midland Fire Department responded to 41 water rescue calls between Friday and Tuesday afternoon. City leaders have have warned of numerous road closures, including these crossings at Midland Draw: Dormard, Pine, Magnolia, Golf Course, San Andreas, Benton, Edwards, and Barber.
Drivers across the Basin have been cautioned to reduce speed and maintain a safe distance to allow enough time to stop your vehicle in case of an emergency.
