(WJW) – A sexually transmitted form of ringworm has been reported for the first time in the United States.
According to a case report published Wednesday by JAMA Dermatology, the case involves a New York City man who is in his 30s. He reported having sex with multiple men during a trip to England, Greens and California, Fox News reports.

According to Fox News, when the patient arrived back at his New York City home, he developed a red itchy rash on his legs and across his groin and butt.
According to the case report, the rare fungus is called trichophyton mentagrophytes type VII.
“The rash looks similar to eczema, a common condition that causes dry, itchy and inflamed skin, as opposed to the typical ringworm fungal skin infection that forms in circles,” Fox News reported.

In 2023, doctors in France reported 13 similar cases. Twelve of those cases involved men who have sex with other men, according to the CDC.
According to Fox News, the New York City man’s infection did respond to standard anti-fungal medications but took nearly five months to fully heal.
