DENVER (KDVR) — A calf was killed by a gray wolf in Routt County on Sunday, marking the first report of its kind in the county and the 10th wolf depredation incident so far in 2024.

Colorado Parks and Wildlife confirmed the incident. A wolf activity map published by CPW has indicated wolf activity in at least some parts of Routt County since reporting began in December 2023, but no wolf depredation incidents had been reported there before June 16.

It was not specified if any of the wolves released in 2023 as part of the state’s reintroduction effort was involved.

Where are wolf depredations happening?

Three Colorado counties have had reports of wolf depredation since 2021: Jackson County, Grand County and now Routt County.

Grand County has seen more livestock killed by wolves this year than in any other county with seven killed in five incidents. In comparison, four livestock deaths have been reported in Jackson County in four incidents.
