French actor Gaspard Ulliel, 37, dies following ski accident in French Alps

Prominent French actor Gaspard Ulliel has died after a serious skiing accident in the French Alps, the regional prosecutor’s office said, according to the Agence France-Press. He was 37.

Ulliel was hospitalized Tuesday after suffering a head injury and has not survived, his family said. He was airlifted to a hospital in Grenoble following the accident on the slopes in the Savoie region.

“French cinema is losing a huge talent, full of charm and energy,” French Finance Minister Bruno Le Maire wrote on Twitter Wednesday.

Born in Hauts-de-Seine, near Paris, in 1984, Ulliel was perhaps best known for portraying fashion superstar Yves Saint Laurent in the 2014 French biographical drama “Saint Laurent,” co-written and directed by Bertrand Bonello.

The film, which was France’s official selection for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 87th Academy Awards, received 10 César Award nominations, including one for Ulliel as best actor.

The prolific actor, who was also the face of Chanel’s fragrance Bleu de Channel, became a full-fledged movie star in his native France in 2004, after starring opposite Audrey Tautou in the Oscar-nominated drama, “A Very Long Engagement.”

In 2005, he won the César Award for Most Promising Actor, after being nominated for the award three years in a row.

He became better known to American audiences two years after that, after playing the young Hannibal Lecter in the 2007 psychological horror “Hannibal Rising.”

Ulliel had recently finished filming “Moon Knight,” the upcoming Disney+ series in which he played Anton Mogart/Midnight Man. The show is scheduled for a March 30 release.
