GC Softball: Kerens loses heartbreaker to Neches
Mar. 21—KERENS — The Kerens LadyCats lost a heartbreaker Tuesday afternoon at home when Neches scored two runs in the sixth and two more in the seventh to edge Kerens 4-3 in a big district showdown.
The LadyCats will get a chance to avenge the tough loss when they travel to Neches Friday. Kerens is in third-place in the district race after splitting a pair of games with Frankston, sweeping Martin's Mill and dropping Tuesday's game to first-place Neches (4-0).
The LadyCats led 3-2 after six innings but Neches scored twice in the top of the seventh to win the game.
Rylee Spivey had a big game for Kerens. She doubled and scored twice, and Olivia Holt went 2-for-3 and scored. Ella Engel came through in the clutch with a huge two-run single to give Kerens a 2-0 lead in the fourth and after Neches knotted the score in the top of the sixth the LadyCats came back with a run and went into the seventh leading 3-2.
Spivey went the distance on the mound, allowing three hits and just one earned run. She struck out nine and walked five.
Neches is having a huge season and is 18-6 and fighting for a chance to win the district title with a 3-2 record.
