Gigi Hadid’s Hair at the AMA Awards Was Actually a Wig

Gigi Hadid wore an artfully styled and trimmed wig at the 2015 American Music Awards on Sunday night, and had us all fooled. The model arrived with a sleek, chin-length bob that is a serious change from her signature waist-length tresses. With the ever-rising 2015 lob takeover, the 20-year-old’s angular crop by Bryce Scarlett is trend-reviving and super flattering. The short look makes her hair seem very thick and healthy (which may be the wig’s doing), and makeup artist Patrick Ta stuck to Hadid’s signature contour and nude lip to suit her new sleek hair look.
“It’s a partial wig that we used mixed with her natural hair to create a faux bob. We cut it once it was already blended with her hair and on her head. The front few inches of it are her real hair,” hair stylist Scarlett told Yahoo Beauty.“We were inspired by Gigi’s dress and the neckline. We felt it called for short, sexy, easy looking hair. She just wanted to do something super different.” During an interview with Giuliana Rancic on the AMAs red carpet, Hadid dropped a hint that the new cut might be just a mirage. “You’ll have to check back tomorrow to see if it’s really short,“ said Hadid. "There are tricks of the trade.”

In July of this year, Hadid wowed the internet over a potential bob. Fans shared collective grief when a street style photo of Hadid wearing a low ponytail had everybody fooled. Even when we thought it was real, we didn’t feel the remorse over Gigi’s bob. Everybody can let out a sigh of relief. As much as we love Gigi’s signature style, we kind of wish this new look was permanent.

Hadid is no stranger to wigs and faux hair. Her modeling career has invited many wigs into her beauty archive. She sported a black, unkempt wig on Marc Jacobs’s makeup-free runway in September 2014, as well as a series of three wigs in her Model of the Year shoot with Yu Tsai this February, a huge, retro wig for Jeremy Scott in September, and a giant blue afro wig on the cover of Vogue Italia shot by Steven Meisel early this month.
Increasing numbers of wigs are seen on celebrities and models on the red carpet, on the runway, and in the pages of magazines. Celebrities are opening up about whole closets devoted to wigs, and maybe soon we’ll all have the chance to change up our hair lengths regularly.
Hadid’s AMAs look channels her supermodel mom, Yolanda Foster’s current style. Like mother, like daughter – the crop looks great on both blondes. Scarlett filled us in on how to achieve the style. “First, apply MATRIX StyleLink Volume Builder Mousse to towel dried at the roots and a dime-sized amount of the MATRIX StyleLink Gloss Booster to ends and comb through,” says Scarlett. “Next, with a medium barreled round brush, blow out hair away from the face.” Give your blowout volume by pointing the dryer upwards from beneath the roots, rather than angling from above your head. “Then, for instant volume and separation, I used MATRIX Style Link Height Riser at the roots, and brushed back with a boar bristle brush to keep hair in place,” Scarlett suggests. “Reapply the MATRIX StyleLink Gloss Booster for added shine and smooth over strands with a flat iron to make the hair more piecey.” Scarlett then added a texturizer to finish the look. He recommends MATRIX StyleLink Texture Builder, “to give the sleek bob a hint of texture.”
