With the stroke of a pen, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis created a four-day Fourth of July holiday weekend this year for state employees.

DeSantis on Monday announced state offices will closed Friday, July 5, in addition to the scheduled closure on July 4 for Independence Day.

In a prepared statement, DeSantis said the extra day off was a reward.

“Following another historic legislative session that delivered tax breaks and record investments for Floridians – all while reducing spending – I hope our state employees use this additional time off to enjoy Florida’s Freedom Summer with their loved ones and celebrate America,” DeSantis said.

The extra Friday paid day off is in addition to the nine paid holidays a year granted to state workers: New Year's Day, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Veterans Day, Thanksgiving, the day after Thanksgiving and Christmas Day.
