Gov. Jeff Landry, LDWF asking for change in Black-bellied whistling duck harvesting season
BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) — Gov. Jeff Landry and the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries requested an expansion to harvest Black-bellied whistling ducks.
Landry and LDWF Secretary Madison Sheahan sent a letter to the Director of the United States Fish and Wildlife Service Martha Williams asking for the expansion of harvest opportunities.
“As the presence of Black-bellied whistling ducks continues to grow in Louisiana, so too should the harvest opportunities. Producers in southwest Louisiana have had to endure agricultural and economic losses due to this increase, and we cannot allow this to continue. Our state and LDWF are committed to finding a solution that benefits all— sportsmen, industry, and our economy,” said Landry.
In the letter, Landry expressed that the Black-bellied whistling duck population has grown over the last two decades.
When is deer hunting season in, near Baton Rouge? Depends on where you are, your weapon.
The Black-bellied whistling duck is a tropical species and LDWF believes an early season would be the best way to manage harvesting opportunities.
The department and Landry are looking to collaborate with the USFWS to create a strategy that will benefit residents, industry, economy and hunters in Louisiana.
“A key function of our Department is to manage our natural resources and to serve the Sportsmen’s Paradise,” said Sheahan. “Our request is to simply improve the management of BBWDs by increasing opportunity to harvest BBWDs to benefit our hunters, our communities, and the economy.”
