BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) — Gov. Jeff Landry is requesting a federal emergency disaster declaration for areas hit by Hurricane Beryl.

According to a release from the governor’s office, Landry has been in contact with Federal Emergency Management Agency Administrator Deanne Criswell and the White House and hopes they will approve the state’s request.

The Governor’s Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness has spoken with FEMA Region 6, which includes Louisiana, Arkansas, Texas, Oklahoma and New Mexico, about the next steps.

“We want to ensure we seek all levels of support for the parishes that continue to recover from this devastating tornado outbreak. I had a great conversation with Administrator Criswell this morning and we are optimistic President Biden and FEMA will approve our request. Several parishes face major costs for cleanup and work associated with the storm. This disaster declaration would help offset much of those costs,” said Landry. “Our office will continue to work with our local, state, and federal partners to ensure those hard-hit parishes are able to have a full recovery.”

Disaster declaration requests are broken down into two FEMA categories, according to the governor’s office. The first category is for debris removal, which allows parishes to be reimbursed for removing debris or be supported directly. The second category is emergency protective measures, which covers any sheltering or evacuation costs. It allows federal resources to be used for life-saving measures.
