Green Lake beach, water in Orchard Park closed for season due to bacteria presence
BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — The Yates Park beach in Orchard Park will be closed for the rest of the season due to the presence of bacteria in the water of Green Lake, police announced.
Buffalo Niagara Waterkeeper staff sampled confirmed harmful algal blooms in Green Lake, and found two species of cyanobacteria while looking at the water. The BNW warned that cyanobacteria can produce toxins that affect people as well as pets and that the toxins can remain even after the algal bloom recedes.
While the beach and water will be closed for the season, police said the Yates Park splash pad will remain open.
