Group teaches families about new Louisiana crime laws affecting teens, carrying guns
BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) — The East Baton Rouge Parish Prison Reform Coalition recently hosted a training session for local families, churches and others who work with kids and teens to learn about new Louisiana crime laws.
“Knowledge is Power: Protecting the Babies” was held at the River Center Library, 250 North Blvd., Baton Rouge. The symposium was targeted at adults who work with children, especially coaches, summer camp staff, etc.
The training presented an overview of what has changed for children, especially now that 17-year-olds can be charged as adults and gun owners will not need a permit to conceal carry.
“The landscape for children has changed in Louisiana. Raise the Age has been repealed and children of color and children with behavioral health issues have a new and much more challenging environment to operate,” said community activist the Rev. Alexia Anderson.

She teamed up with the coalition and other organizations for the training and said it was “about empowering youth leaders and advocates on navigating these new waters.”
