Vice President Kamala Harris stepped to the podium for her presidential debate against former President Donald Trump Tuesday night, though it was not her first time under the presidential spotlight.

Harris ran for the Democratic nomination for the 2020 election, though the campaign did not reach the first votes and caucuses.

Harris' campaign led to President Joe Biden to choose the then-California Senator to add her to the eventual winning ticket.

What happened to Harris' campaign in 2020?

Harris declared her candidacy for the Democratic nomination for the 2020 election in January 2019.

The high point of her campaign came during the first primary debate when she scored points on eventual nominee and running-mate Biden. During the debate Harris criticized Biden for praising his work with segregationist Senators and his previous opposition to bussing.

"There was a little girl in California who was part of the second class to integrate her public schools and she was bused to school every day. That little girl was me," Harris said.

Harris had a moment of momentum after the debate but could not make a push into the Iowa Caucuses, suspending her campaign in December 2019.

Harris was tapped to be Biden's Vice President on August 11, 2020.
