“The CPS has a duty to keep all cases under continuous review and we have decided that there is no longer a realistic prospect of conviction. We have explained our decision to all parties.
“We would always encourage any potential victims of sexual assault to come forward and report to police and we will prosecute wherever our legal test is met.”
The CPS brought two charges of indecent assault against Weinstein in June 2022, relating to incidents that were said to have taken place in London in the mid-1990s. These have now been discontinued following a review of the evidence.
The disgraced producer is currently serving a 16-year sentence in a U.S. prison after being convicted of rape of an Italian model in LA. His legal team appealed against the conviction in June, having vowed to do so soon after the trial came to an end.
The 72-year-old Pulp Fiction producer is facing a retrial for rape after a 2020 conviction was overturned, with a November trial date set to go ahead. In July, a 4-3 ruling at the New York Court of Appeals flipped Weinstein’s conviction, with the the judge in charge of the trial saying there had been “erroneously admitted testimony of uncharged, alleged prior sexual acts against persons other than the complainants of the underlying crimes.”
Last month, a New York judge refused to throw out Julia Ormond’s lawsuit against Disney, CAA and Miramax relating to an alleged assault committed by Weinstein in 1995. No trial date for negligence has been set yet.
