Here's some suggestions for your summer reading
It’s time for summer reading, which means something a little different for adults. Instead of bookmarks and prize packs, maybe your summer reading goals involve an easy, poolside read or a stack of books kept on the porch that you can devour with a cicada soundtrack. Choose one of these or ask a local bookseller or librarian to help you find your perfect match. You still get a prize.
Stream and read – “The Last Thing He Told Me”
By Laura Dave (Simon & Schuster): In case you missed this one when Reese Witherspoon picked it for her book club, a paperback edition (Apple TV+ tie-in) will let you judge for yourself if the book or limited streaming series, starring Jennifer Garner, is best. With twists and turns and a mother-daughter dynamic, this is one to tuck in your bag for summer vacation.
“Midnight Club”
By Christopher Pike (Simon & Schuster): Yes, indeed, adults do read YA novels. While the backdrop of a hospice for teens is not a light setting, this is a quick read and might give you the thrills and chills that are perfect for reading by flashlight on a warm, summer night. Follow it up with the Netflix series created by horror master Mike Flanagan.
More to explore -- “So Sorry for Your Loss: How I Learned to Live with Grief, and Other Grave Concerns”
by Dina Gachman (Union Square and Co.): Live long enough and grief finds you. It’s part of life. In the span of three years, Gachman lost her mother to cancer and her sister to addiction – tragedies compounded by their proximity. But this tale shows that some things are universal and that life, joy and laughter are still possible, even in the face of deep, unexpected loss.
“Where Should We Camp Next? National Parks”
By Stephanie and Jeremy Puglisi (Sourcebooks): Get succinct, clear details and advice on more than 300 camping and glamping sites across U.S. National Parks Service properties, along with highlights of the parks and ideas for family travel, bringing pets, hiking, biking, safety, city tips and more. This is a camping guide but also a wish list for anyone who wants to see the country and make memories in the process.
Local ties: “Carolina’s Ring”
By Lynn Seldon (Koehler Books): The second book in “The Ring” trilogy, this book opens with references to Paris Mountain, Furman University and Travelers Rest, putting Upstate readers among the fictional characters as their stories play out. Military school graduates, in particular, may see themselves and their classmates in these tales. The author is a graduate of VMI, an Army veteran and, along with his wife, Cele Seldon, has extensive travel writing experience, including books about Savannah and Charleston, available at seldonink.com.
