Homicide, more charged in Eden crash that killed pedestrian: All to know
On May 8, members of the Wicomico County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigation Division and Patrol Division arrested Catherine Ann Thornton and served her with a criminal indictment charging homicide - MV / vessel - drugs and more charges.
Here's what we know so far.
Thornton was held without bond at the Wicomico County Detention Center on the following felony charges: homicide – MV / vessel -drugs, homicide – MV / vessel – CDS, negligent manslaughter auto/boat, etc. She also faces the misdemeanor charges of alter physical evidence crim proc, CDS: possess-not marijuana and CR neg manslaughter veh/vess; and the traffic violations of failure to immediately return and remain at scene of accident involving death, failure of driver involved in accident to render and reasonable assistance to injured person.
The results of the investigation were presented to the Grand Jury for Wicomico County for review on Monday, May 6, and the grand jury returned the indictment for Thornton.
What happened in the 2023 crash in Eden
Thornton was involved in an incident that occurred on Monday, Dec. 4, 2023, at 8:03 p.m. Deputies from the Wicomico County Sheriff’s Office and EMS personnel were dispatched to the area of South Upper Ferry Road and Siloam Road in Eden for a pedestrian that had been struck by a motor vehicle.
Deputies arrived on scene and found the victim, Aaron Douglas III, with life-threatening injuries. Douglas was flown to a medical facility due to the nature and severity of his injuries, the release stated.
CRIME: Wicomico County man arrested and charged with murder of his mother
Deputies were advised that the suspect vehicle fled the scene. Witnesses provided a suspect vehicle description that was broadcast to allied law enforcement agencies.
A potential suspect vehicle was located a short time later by the Princess Anne Police Department. The vehicle was seized pending crime scene analysis, the release stated.
Due to the severe nature of the collision, the Sheriff’s Office Crash Reconstruction Unit and Criminal Investigation Division responded to the scene to investigate. A person of interest was identified, and charges were pending based on the outcome of the investigation.
On Dec. 13, 2023, the Wicomico County Sheriff’s Office was notified that MDouglas had succumbed to his injuries and died, the release stated.
