House Ethics Committee is investigating Republican Texas Rep. Troy Nehls
The House Ethics Committee is investigating Rep. Troy Nehls, R-Texas, the committee confirmed in a Tuesday statement.
Ethics Committee Chair Michael Guest, R-Miss., and Ranking Member Susan Wild, D-Penn., decided to “extend the matter regarding” the Texas lawmaker after a referral from the Office of Congressional Ethics in December, the committee confirmed Tuesday
The Office of Congressional Ethics is a nonpartisan, independent entity that reviews misconduct allegations against House lawmakers and their staff.
The circumstances and scope of the investigation are still unclear. The House’s Ethics Committee is expected to announce more details by May 10.
The committee did emphasize Tuesday that the disclosure “does not itself indicate that any violation has occurred, or reflect any judgment on behalf of the Committee.”
Nehls in a statement said he looks "forward to assisting the House Committee on Ethics inquiry into my campaign’s finances." The committee itself did not specify that the investigation centered around finances.
“My campaign has complied with every Federal Election Commission (FEC) law, and my books are open," the Texas lawmaker added.
Nehls was elected to the House in 2020, and he previously served in the U.S. Army Reserve and as a sheriff in Fort Bend County, Texas.
