If you bought frozen waffles recently, maybe don't eat them until you've confirmed the package you have is unaffected by a massive new recall.

TreeHouse Foods, a large-scale food processing company, issued a voluntary recall on Friday, Oct. 18, covering several big-name and store brands of waffles over concerns the products could be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes—an organism that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, elderly or pregnant people, and others with weakened immune systems.

Officials suggest that otherwise healthy individuals may only suffer short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain, and diarrhea.

The nearly 700 varieties of recalled waffles were sold at several grocery and department store chains in both the U.S. and Canada, including Target, Walmart, Food Lion, Hannaford, Harris Teeter, H-E-B, Publix, Tops, Price Chopper, as well as several others. Some of the frozen waffle brands to be recalled include Kodiak Cakes, Best Choice, Giant Eagle, Target's Good & Gather, Walmart's Great Value label, Food Lion's own brand, the list goes on.

Customers can check exactly what types of waffles are covered by the recall by reviewing the list of affected UPCs online. Treehouse Foods also put together a full list of product images to help make identifying the recalled products a little easier.

According to the official statement, the recall was initiated after a discovery at a facility during routine testing. As of writing, there have been no confirmed reports of illness linked to the recalled products to date. However, the company urges customers with recalled waffles to dispose of them or return them to where they were purchased for credit.

Those with questions may contact the company at (800)-596-2903, Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. (CST). Customers concerned about potential illness are directed to contact their healthcare provider.
