Hurricane Kristy weakened into a Category 3 storm on Thursday and with further weakening expected throughout the weekend, the National Hurricane Center said Friday afternoon.

As of Friday afternoon, Kristy was located about 1115 miles southwest of the southern tip of Baja, California, and was moving northwest and expected to continue in that direction through Friday night and the weekend.

Kristy had maximum sustained winds near 115 mph, with higher gusts Thursday afternoon, the NHC said.

The storm is forecast to continue to weaken over the weekend as it moves moves over open water. But swells generated by Kristy are expected affect portions of the west coast of the Baja, California peninsula over the weekend, the hurricane center said. These swells are "likely to cause life-threatening surf and rip current conditions," they said.
