Idris Elba is set to reprise his role as impulsive detective Luther in a fifth season of the acclaimed crime drama.

The BBC has released a first-look trailer ahead of the four new episodes, which will reportedly see DCI John Luther reunite with Alice Morgan, portrayed by Ruth Wilson.

The latest teaser trailer gives little away, simply showing a roughed-up Luther slowly walking towards the camera.

The tagline reads: “This will hurt, Luther.”

The official synopsis hints at a “new nightmare” forcing Luther to confront the “depths of human depravity.”

It reads: “When the moonless shadows of London give birth to a new nightmare, DCI John Luther must once again confront the depths of human depravity.

“As a series of monstrous killings becomes ever more audacious, Luther and new recruit DS Catherine Halliday are confounded by a tangle of leads and misdirection that seems designed to protect an unspeakable horror.
