Idris Elba movie gets unexpected TV prequel
Idris Elba's movie Pacific Rim is set to receive a new TV series, over a decade after its original release.
The 2013 movie kicked off the Pacific Rim universe, which saw monstrous creatures emerging from a portal (known as The Breach) in the Pacific Ocean. As humanity fought back, they built giant battle robots named Jaegers and tried to close The Breach.
The sequel, Pacific Rim Uprising, was released in 2018 and set 10 years after the Battle of the Breach. The Netflix animated series Pacific Rim: The Black concluded its second and final season in 2022.

Now, Legendary Entertainment has ordered an origin series for the franchise. According to Deadline, the project will be developed by production company Chronology, which was founded by Bird Box's Eric Heisserer and Carmen Lewis.
"Eric is a multitalented, prolific creator whose track record of critical and commercial successes speaks for itself," said Jason Clodfelter, President of Legendary Television. "We are thrilled to launch our partnership with Eric, Chronology, and Carmen, with a new entry in the epic, globally popular Pacific Rim universe."
The news comes after the incredibly successful Dune franchise also got a prequel series from Legendary Entertainment.

The six-part series Dune: Prophecy will take place 10,000 years before the events of the main movies.
Inspired by Frank Herbert's novel Sisterhood of Dune, the show follows sisters Tula (Williams) and Valya (Watson) Harkonnen and focuses on how they established the fabled Bene Gesserit.
Following a range of changes during production, an official release window was recently confirmed. Dune: Prophecy is set to arrive on Max's streaming service in November.
