Improved healthcare quality makes WV move up in national rankings
CHARLESTON, WV (WVNS) — The Mountain State’s commitment to healthcare in rural areas has been recognized once more as West Virginia reached an important milestone in the Medicare Beneficiary Quality Improvement Project (MBQIP) ranks.
Working in tandem with the Healthcare Education Foundation of WV (HEF) with support from the West Virginia Department of Health’s (DH) State Office of Rural Health, West Virginia’s 21 Critical Access Hospitals (CAH) continue to excel in service quality in rural locations.

The Health Resources and Services Administration conducts assessments on states in accordance to reports received and improvements in respects to quality of care over the last twelve months. As for this year, West Virginia rose two places in the ranking, leaving the state to be listed as fourth, a marked improvement from last year’s ranking in sixth. Success measures for the rankings include inpatient/outpatient care, care transitions, patient safety, and patient engagement.
This achievement is a testament to the unwavering commitment of our healthcare providers across the state. Through collaborative efforts and a focus on continuous improvement, West Virginia’s hospitals have demonstrated exceptional dedication to enhancing healthcare outcomes in our rural areas.

Four years later: how COVID changed healthcare
MBQIP awards acknowledge states that operate under the highest levels of quality improvement and rates of report in rural care institutions. The Mountain State’s movement from sixth to fourth in the rankings spotlights its proactive approach to the enhancement of quality and care that patients receive.
