The Inbetweeners could be set to return to our screens after a star of the hit sitcom revealed the cast is in talks.

Joe Thomas, who played Simon Cooper in the E4 coming-of-age comedy, said the cast have spoken about a comeback.

"Yes, it's happened in various forms. All of us feel it would be nice to do," he said when asked about a new series of The Inbetweeners on the Always Be Comedy podcast.

The main cast also included James Buckley, Simon Bird and Blake Harrison as a group of teenagers at a British comprehensive school navigating love, friendship and their hellish head of sixth form.

Thomas said the cast has reservations about whether a new season of the show would "be as good" as the original, which also spawned two films.

"We're all still around, we're all still in each other's lives. We all still like each other. And if it was something that came up, I think we would want to do it. I feel like we all still really like each other," he continued.

"We've all been able to go away and get various monkeys off our backs, in terms of things that we felt we needed to do other than The Inbetweeners to prove something to ourselves."

He shared that a new project would likely follow the group of friends away from their school days, and one of the "ideas out there" was a story involving a stag do in Las Vegas.

The comedy, which also starred Emily Atack and Emily Head, ran for three series between 2008 and 2010 and was met with widespread acclaim, earning two BAFTA nominations and a British Academy Television award.

Bird, who played Will McKenzie on the show, previously said The Inbetweeners "wouldn't be made today" due to its "casual homophobia".

"I honestly think it wouldn't be commissioned today," the actor told The Telegraph.

He continued: "I rationalise it to myself by saying that at the time it was an accurate representation of the way teenagers talk to each other. Is that still the case now? I assume not.

"Although the programme was set in the 2000s, it was based on a pilot set in 1990, so even in the 2000s it wasn't really an accurate reflection of how teenagers spoke."

The Inbetweeners series one to three are available to watch on Channel 4 on demand.
