Independence Towers residents hold vigil for boy who died in fall
INDEPENDENCE, Mo. — A vigil was held Friday night for a boy, 3, who died Monday at Independence Towers.
Moses Lee Bass Jr., 30, and Destiny Randle, 28, are charged with child endangerment resulting in the death of a child. On Monday, a 3-year-old boy died after falling nine stories from an apartment window.
Neighbors who gathered at Friday’s vigil repeated some of the same concerns expressed by KC Tenants within hours of the boy’s death, saying if only the air conditioning had been working or certain repairs had been made, the boy might still be alive.
Prosecutors say the adults in his care knew the 8th floor window locks didn’t work and kept the small children in the bedroom unsupervised.

New Hope Baptist Church Pastor Darren Tharp told those who attended the vigil to stop casting blame and instead to concentrate on the victim. He encouraged the crowd of about 25-30 residents over and over again to say his name, Titus.
An organizer of the vigil, who didn’t know the family, but had seen them, explained why she felt it was important for the Independence Towers community to mourn together.
“It’s just very sad. Everybody in the building has been kind of down this week. I just thought we should do a little something. We couldn’t do anything at Independence Towers, the management didn’t want us to. So we just came across the street here.”

The vigil also included prayers for first responders who tried to save the boy’s life, as well as Independence Towers residents, before it included with “Amazing Grace.”
