Inmates help save correctional officer amid medical emergency at Downtown Detention Center

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — Nashville-Davidson County Sheriff Daron Hall shared his gratitude for a group of inmates at the Downtown Detention Center who provided critical assistance to a choking correctional officer.

“It’s not our job to judge,” Hall said. “People make mistakes and some mistakes they’ve made are very serious, but that doesn’t mean they can’t make better decisions moving forward and change their life for the good.”

According to the sheriff’s office, the inmates noticed the officer in distress and immediately took action. One inmate performed the Heimlich maneuver, dislodging the obstruction so the officer could breathe again.

Seconds later, the officer lost consciousness, but the inmates stayed vigilant, keeping her safe until other officers and medical personnel arrived at the scene, authorities said.

“In this situation, it’s the last place you’d think you receive a life saving measure — from someone who by all means, may have ended up in a system for doing some very bad things at some point in their life. Hall said. “That means, to me, that they can change. They changed that day and saved a life.”
