IRS gives some relief to Francine victims in Louisiana: What to know about deadlines
BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) — The IRS is giving people and businesses in Louisiana more time to file taxes and make payments because of Hurricane Francine.
The storm hit the coast on Wednesday, Sept. 11, as a Category 2 storm and left wind damage and flooding in its wake. According to a news release, this relief is part of the federal government’s response to the damage caused by the storm.
If anyone in Louisiana had an extension to file their 2023 tax return, they now have until Feb. 3, 2025, the IRS said in a news release. This doesn’t apply to payments that should have been made last spring. The areas covered are listed on the IRS website.
Quarterly tax payments due in September and January are now extended to Feb. 3. The IRS also pushed payroll and excise tax returns due in October and January to the same date.
The IRS said any penalties for missed payroll or excise tax deposits from Sept. 10 to 25 will be waived if paid by Sept. 25, 2024.
If IRS records show a person lives in a disaster area, this relief happens automatically. The news release said those who have moved to the disaster area after filing taxes may need to contact the IRS if they receive a penalty notice.
Additional tax relief
The IRS said those who had uninsured losses due to the storm can claim them on either their 2024 or 2023 tax return. Individual taxpayers have until Oct. 15, 2025, to decide which year to claim it.

According to the IRS, payments received for disaster relief don’t count as taxable income. There may also be relief if anyone needs to take money from retirement accounts early.
The IRS said there are free services to help file taxes, like Volunteer Income Tax Assistance and IRS Free File.
