James Cameron explains Avatar 3's ominous title

James Cameron has explained the reasoning behind Avatar 3's ominous title.

The follow-up to last year's The Way of Water is set to premiere in Christmas 2025, and will take place in the volcanic regions of Pandora, where Jake Sully and his family will learn that the Na'vi who dwell there are particularly unfriendly.

Last weekend, Cameron took to the stage with Sam Worthington and Zoe Salda?a at Disney's D23 Expo to reveal that the threequel's title is Avatar: Fire and Ash.

The franchise's late producer Jon Landau previously teased the literal explanation behind the film's title, describing it as "an aggressive, volcanic race".

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Cameron has now unpacked the deeper meaning behind the title, explaining that it took a long time to choose a moniker that resonated with the contents of the film.

"I don't think I could say too much about it until you actually see the film and you see what it means, but if you think of fire as hatred, anger, violence, that sort of thing, and ash is the aftermath," he added.

"So what's the aftermath? Grief, loss, right? And then what does that cause in the future? More violence, more anger, more hatred. It's a vicious cycle. So that's the thinking."

Cameron went on to reveal that Fire and Ash goes to "darker places" than the previous films, adding: "But it's still obviously this open, glorious, grand adventure, which is what we aspire to do every time we set out."

The news comes after the director previously revealed that Fire and Ash will introduce "two completely new cultures", as well as the narrator changing from Jake to his teenage son Lo'ak.

The anticipated third instalment in the series follows The Way of Water's hugely successful release. The sequel ended up grossing over $2.3 billion at the global box office, making it the third highest-grossing movie of all time.
