Generate Key Takeaways

Gutted doesn’t begin to describe how many Americans feel after the 2024 election, especially for parents who know what this means for our children’s future. The loss of bodily autonomy, protections for our planet, health and safety, and so many other issues that former President and convicted felon Donald Trump has threatened to destroy. For the parents of transgender kids like Jamie Lee Curtis, the future is uncertain and scary — and she just shared a powerful message of encouragement for everyone who feels despair right now.

The Freaky Friday star, who is mom to transgender daughter Ruby, 28, and Annie, 37, with husband Christopher Guest, shared a postcard of an Eagle holding an American flag and the words: “Your Flag and my flag, The Flag that flies above; The nation where we work and live, The country that we love.”

In the caption, she wrote a lengthy post processing her feelings on the election, which saw a victory for Trump. “So the results are in. Many will be celebrating, possibly even gloating over their victory. Many will be stunned and sad with the terrible feelings of the loss. That is the same result despite who wins because that’s what America and democracy looks like. Has always looked like. So what does it mean?”

Curtis says the future holds “a sure return to a more restrictive, some fear draconian time.”

“Many fear their rights will be impeded and denied. Many minority groups and young people will be afraid. Gay and trans people will be more afraid,” she continued. “We know that many women will now find it difficult to get the reproductive healthcare that they need and deserve. For all those people there will be those who will help you. Me included.”

Tears have been flowing all morning, but Curtis’s words are a little balm to the distraught soul today. She is all of our mothers, offering words of comfort and hope that we can then pass down to our children. And it is so, so needed right now.

Despite feelings of grief, Curtis wants us to stay strong and “wake up and fight.” She continued, “Fight for women and our children and their futures and fight against tyranny, one day at a time. One fight at a time. One protest at a time. That’s what it means to be an American. That’s what it has always meant and will always mean regardless of the outcome.”

It’s so, so hard to keep on fighting. It feels impossible to finally feel like our country is moving forward and past bigotry and hate, only to be thrust back into the nightmare reality that most Americans truly don’t care about anything or anyone other than themselves. Curtis recognizes that it’s hard, and she encourages grace for ourselves.

“Be gentle with people today. Be gentle with yourself today. Feel your feelings today but most of all … Be an American today,” she concluded.

Many people expressed their concern and fear of the future with Trump, who has made anti-transgender attacks and fear-mongering part of his campaign, back in charge. “I am absolutely and genuinely terrified, not just for myself, but for those I love. I cannot wrap my head around the rationale and thought processes that would allow this to happen, and I feel like I have lost any faith in the future of this country,” one person commented.

Someone else wrote, “Thank you for this. I needed to read this. Mom of a trans adult and I’m terrified for her but I’ll never stop fighting to protect her.”

“We just hit the reset button on the country in the worst way possible. I am ashamed of people,” someone else said. Another wrote, “This is such a nightmare. I’m tired of having to fight for our rights … especially when we already had them and they were taken away.”

The Halloween alum also shared a photo of democrat Adam Schliff, who was elected to represent California in the U.S. Senate. “There is hope. He will be a strong voice in California and I believe the future for our country. @repadamschiff,” she captioned the post.

On Election Day, Curtis shared a picture of Vice President Kamala Harris, praising her for running as the democratic nominee for president. “Whatever happens, I just want to personally say, on behalf of all of the women and their daughters and granddaughters, sons and trans kids and gay kids and EVERYONE EVERYWHERE ALL AT ONCE, we all want to say THANK YOU for stepping up and into this race,” she wrote. “You have been a shining beacon of hope and possibility and promise, and that has given us all hope and possibility and promise, and that is worth all of the efforts you have put into your campaign. Thank you, Kamala. WE ARE PROUD OF YOU!”

Curtis has been vocal about fighting climate change, supporting women with addiction struggles, and supporting transgender rights. We may have had a huge loss today, but we can follow Curtis’s example and continue to fight, continue to have hope, and continue to do everything we can to protect the future generation.
