Jim Rash gives update on 'Community' movie: 'I'm hoping next year'
"I'll happily hold my breath and wait, and exhale when it's time," Rash said
Community fans have been patiently waiting for the the beloved TV show to get its long awaited movie. It's been almost two years since the project was green lit by Peacock.
Speaking to Yahoo Canada about his recent film Fly Me to the Moon, Community star Jim Rash provided a bit of an update on where things stand, giving fans a glimmer of hope that this movie is on the horizon.
"I'll happily hold my breath and wait, and exhale when it's time," Rash said. "I'm hoping next year."
"Everyone's happily busy in their own things, but I maintain faith that the schedules work."
Created by Dan Harmon, Community originally premiered in 2009 and ran for five seasons before it was first cancelled, then resurrected by the now defunct Yahoo! Screen for an additional season, before coming to an end in 2015.
The cast consisted of Rash, Joel McHale, Donald Glover, Chevy Chase, Gillian Jacobs, Danny Pudi, Alison Brie, Gillian Jacobs, Ken Jeong and Yvette Nicole Brown.
Back in February, Harmon told Variety the script for the Community movie is "almost done."
"Yes, I think script-wise, we're hopefully headed in the right direction," Rash confirmed.
On Tuesday's episode of The View, promoting his upcoming film My Spy: The Eternal City, Jeong said it's a matter of "when" the Community film will get made, not "if."
"It's getting everybody's schedule aligned," he said on The View. "It is really about getting the whole band back together and we will do it. Absolutely. It's a matter of when."
Will Donald Glover be in the 'Community' film?
Since Community, Glover created the series Atlanta and has also had an impressive music career under the moniker Childish Gambino (which he is retiring).
With "Troy and Abed in the morning" being such an important part of the Community series, fans have been concerned that Glover won't come back for the movie to reprise his role of Troy Barnes. But that doesn't seem to be the case.
Glover told Entertainment Tonight in January that he was texting Harmon about the project and he's "all in."
"It's really just a schedule thing [but] I'm in," Glover said.
What happened to Chevy Chase in 'Community'
While Chase was part of the original cast of Community, he was fired in 2013, in Season 4, after using a racial slur on set.
McHale confirmed to The Post that Chase should not be returning for the movie.
“I don’t think he’s allowed to. I don’t think it would happen," McHale told The Post. "I’m guessing if you asked him, he wouldn’t be interested."
How to watch 'Community'
Community is no longer streaming in Canada, meaning Canadian fans will have to purchase all six seasons of the show through sites like Apple TV to watch the series.
In the U.S., the the show is available to stream on Peacock.
